Food-Grade Carton Safety Standards and Certification System Analysis

Food-Grade Carton Safety Standards and Certification System Analysis

Food-Grade Carton Safety Standards and Certification System Analysis

  1. Core Pain Points of Food-Grade Cartons for B2B Enterprises

B2B enterprises in the food and fresh produce industry (such as food processing plants, fresh e-commerce platforms, and cross-border food traders) focus on two core points when selecting cartons: first, safety and compliance (avoiding the migration of harmful substances from cartons to food), and second, freshness protection (preventing food from moisture and pollution). Failure to meet the food-grade standards of the target market may result in cargo detention, destruction, or even a brand trust crisis.

  1. Mainstream Global Food-Grade Carton Safety Standards

Chinese Standard (GB)

Core standard: GB 4806.8-2016 “Paper and Board Materials and Products in Contact with Food”;

Key requirements: Heavy metals (lead, cadmium) ≤5mg/kg, formaldehyde ≤30mg/kg, fluorescent whitening agents not detectable;

Application scenario: Food packaging sold domestically and exported to China.

EU Standard

Core regulations: (EC) No 1935/2004 (General Framework for Food Contact Materials), (EU) No 10/2011 (Special Requirements for Plastics and Paper Products);

Key requirements: Total migration ≤60mg/dm², heavy metals ≤1mg/kg, BPA (Bisphenol A) – containing coatings prohibited;

Certification mark: Need to pass the “Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for Food Contact Materials”.

US Standard (FDA)

Core regulation: 21 CFR Part 176 (Paper Products in Contact with Food);

Key requirements: Paper additives must be on the FDA-approved list, printing ink shall not contain toxic solvents, and the temperature resistance range must adapt to the food storage environment (-40℃~120℃);

Certification requirement: Third-party test report (such as SGS, Intertek) must be provided.

Japanese Standard (JIS)

Core standard: JIS Z 1516-2015 “Paperboard for Food Packaging”;

Key requirements: Total bacterial count ≤100cfu/g, mold ≤10cfu/g, pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Escherichia coli) not detectable;

Special requirement: Imported food cartons must be marked with “For Food Use” and the manufacturer’s registration number.

III. Practical Selection Suggestions for B2B Enterprises

Prioritize suppliers with “dual certifications”: Enterprises with both domestic GB certification and target market (such as FDA, EU) certifications to reduce compliance risks;

Pay attention to detailed design: Choose cartons without fluorescent whitening agents and food-grade adhesives (such as starch glue) to avoid migration of harmful substances at the bonding points;

Customize freshness functions on demand: For fresh food, select “waterproof + breathable” dual-function food-grade cartons, paired with food-grade desiccants to extend the shelf life.
